Can the touchpad to be a relevant educational tool in schools? For two years, the Academy of Grenoble leads a global experiment to determine the interest in this terminal, whose use comes additionally with educational tools “classics” such as textbooks. Yael Briswalter, school inspector and adviser CTBT to the Rector of the Academy of Grenoble, and therefore responsible for the development of digital pedagogy and organization of teacher training in this field, sharing its experience the integration of this terminal in the first and second degree institutions, providing inputs and also its limits.
- Grenoble Academy: national experiment “digital tablet”
- digital tablets used
CCM-How did this global experiment project on the integration of tablet computers in some schools of the Academy of Grenoble?
YB-We relied on previous experience, that works very well: the distribution by walkman modern languages and literature, implemented in five years, and is now became customary. On this basis, we wondered what could bring a touch pad, more functional, and whose use is intuitive and requires no learning.
With the starting point for a number of assumptions concerning inputs of the touch pad in the learning context. First Reading: it is impossible to read “In Search of Lost Time” on a computer whose screen is not suitable for this activity, this obstacle is removed with the use of this terminal type, very suitable for reading. More broadly, one of the goals was whether a touch interface makes it easier to learn.
Another hypothesis, related to its technical peculiarity is that the early start of a tablet, and autonomy, make this type of terminal? easier to use than a laptop in an educational context
Finally, the touch pad it is cheaper in the end than the laptop, from the standpoint of maintenance costs? CCM-which tablet models are used, and how many establishments are affected? YB-forty institutions participate in this experiment. Most of them have opted for the iPad, to a question of availability. 200 terminals are part of a permanent endowment, and 150 are available to the institutions, as a loan, for periods of short to medium term, and to meet specific educational objectives. TLC-What is the results of this experiment? Can you give some examples of use of the touch pad in teaching situation? YB-principal education: the touch pad is a learning tool “peripheral” to the realization of a task compared to the computer, which occupies a central place: the teacher gives the student a complex task to achieve, it implements the strategy tailored to achieve by working: his knowledge, courses, and thus possibly its tablet to access resources otherwise unavailable (eg internet).
The illustration of the use “device” of the tablet is its position on the Student table: it is next to it, and it works with its sheet and pencil in front of him. The touch pad is part so in the research process and investigation autonomy: that the student is able to implement only a strategy and use the touch pad in a reasoned way, is particularly interesting. Regarding the use of concrete examples touch pad in class, I can cite the case of reading a text for students with disabilities, specifically dyslexia here: the tablet provides another way to access the text, to “the Cid “eg. either in comics or in voice playback through a multisensory approach? CCM-what are the other possible uses of the touch pad Overall, the touch pad is well suited to receive jobs that creation. But among other uses: include collaborative writing, via the Evernote application, or blogging. CCM-From a practical point of view, what are the advantages and limitations that you observed? One the main practical advantages is the very low failure rates, lack of viruses, and thus the minimum maintenance. Among the drawbacks: for now, the touch pad is not compatible ave the Digital Area of Labour, ‘collaborative space student giving access to educational resources, a tool box, a calendar or monitoring of school life (lack of notes). Better integration of the tablet with this space further enhance the interest of the use of this device. The other major disadvantage is file management. It is possible to create an independent tree with folders as permitted by a computer, since they are stored in applications. This is an important limitation.
