How to Find Your Style of Clothing

You want to work in fashion, but you don’t know what studies to start? Get your slippers and follow the guide!

Okay, September is a good month and I’m already here to talk of studies, it’s not cool to oil.

But If you want to work in the wonderful world of fashion and its glitter paved after the bin, this is not always the Yippee-joy-to find the info. So, that’s some explanations and a small guide schools. All this stuff is far from comprehensive, but is rather aimed to to clear the forest of higher education.

A few things to know before you begin

Before starting studies of mode, there is a truth as re-leases that proverbs from your grandmother, but you need to be aware: the gap between the dream and the reality is real. In other words, unless you have a lot of Bowl and to be the new Mozart of couture, you won’t become Sonia Rykiel in two days. Most of the creative work for the same the same as for Dior. And fashion, is a full-time and all-round investment. Here’s a couple of things that it is good to know before you go cut silk.

The move is now
Unless you live near Paris, Lyon or Lille, which are the three large “poles” of studies mode, need you to be ready to move. There are plenty of training in France, but the best-known schools are often in the big cities. Regardless of the location you choose for your fashion studies, if you’re determined to stay at the casa with your mates from College, it can be a tad complicated. Ditto for internships: If you don’t like traveling, your opportunities will be reduced.

Be ready to put the hand in the wallet
Settle alone in a new city, it costs the skin of the kidneys. Also live there. All studies are expensive, but training of fashion particularly hurt the ticket holder. In the case of a private school, you should pay your year. In the public education is almost free but remains the major problem: the stuff. Mode, we’ll ask you to buy hardware from creative leisure, many fabrics (a meter of silk, it is cheros) and possibly to invest in a model and a sewing machine.

Need us time, insomnia…
Another major investment of fashion studies: time. A process of creation, it is research, trials, big losers, permanent restarts… All this food a good part of your day, or sometimes even your holiday and your nights. So hard to hold a job next to your studies, and blues shots arrive. Janique thankfully, your social life will not necessarily die from one day to the next, but some periods may be a bit borderline.

Hello doctor, I can’t sew
You’ve never touched a needle of your life and you have no book super-pro with your creations? For beginners, just after a general sandbox, it’s (almost) okay. On the other hand, you have to show that you are motivated and that you’re interested in art, news, fashion… People will seek your “creative potential”, the technique will come later (we’ll teach it to you or you’re on your with your paws, according to schools). In public training, a big part of the job is also occupied by the general subjects. And in creative subjects, no way to make the free-stye, teachers will ask you to explain your approach, to reflect on concepts: good catch of head in sight.

Doors open, my love
The open doors of the formations of mode are often held between January and March. This is absolutely not an obligation to go, but if you give you the means, it’s all profit. Visit the property allows you to see truly take the temperature of the school, to feel if his State of mind makes you dig or not, see the work of students and to ask questions. Most of the time, teachers are hyper stressed, by the organisation, and will not have no time to answer you, so head to the students, who are anyway requisitioned for this task and to keep the room. If ever you hanging not with your interlocutor, tent with someone else who may have a different feeling.

The available studies just after IBC

Model making (bac + 2)
To make the model, i.e. a technical job which is to produce prototypes based on the designs of designers, you can do a BTS flexible materials industry, industrial model option. In general, we’re going to ask you a bac pro, STI2D or S. Otherwise, the Union room of the Parisian couture school has trained four years in model building.

Arts training applied public
Tell me what is your sandbox and I’ll give your plan for the future. If you’ve done a sandbox applied arts (ST2A), you can apply directly for the studies I’m talking below. If you go out of a general, bin you’ll have to go through an upgrade in applied arts (MANAA) in the public, a year required to learn the creative process. You are to access by transcript and letter of motivation’, sometimes supplemented by a topic to achieve and an interview. For pro stores, it depends on the schools, better call on a case-by-case.

In all cases, for the higher education taught in high schools and public schools (the most famous mode is Duperré in Paris), the selection is made on academic record and letter of motivation, then on interview with a portfolio of creative work. You can find (bac + 2):

  • The BTS design of mode mode option: it essentially forms you to work in fashion design, i.e. to design the overall shape of the garment.
  • The BTS design of textile option mode, materials, surface: is the other part of fashion, one that is interested in the material, the color, the texture. Skills that seek brands but also offices of style.
  • Graduates of crafts (DMA): compared to the BTS which cover a little all areas of fashion, the DMA are more focused on techniques specific, more “accurate”.You can find training in embroidery, weaving here and there, and in costumes (cinema, theatre).

For all these courses, you have a least a month at the end of first year compulsory internship. Schools sometimes have contacts, but in general, you should move the booty of yourself.

  • The school national superior of Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) in Parisworks a little differently: you go after a competition in several steps. The first year is common to all creative, and you you specialists in second year. For fashion, ENSAD offers studies in textile design and material and design clothing and the course lasts 5 years.

Training type fine arts
Fine arts, is not that of the drawing. Several schools offer courses in textile in 3 years design : for example, a national diploma of arts and techniques (DNAT) in Lyon after a first General year, or a national diploma of fine arts in textile/surface (DNAP) at the school of art of Mulhouse (also called Le Quai). The way of thinking is not exactly the same as in applied art, so you see what you like.

Private schools (paid)
In styling, you can find plenty of private schools whose reputation is more or less good and prices more or less to gouge the liver. Admission is often done on maintenance, with or without portfolio of work. That is best known and which an image medium or good:

  • Condé (€7600 / year): a network of schools which works on the same principle as the public training with MANAA andfashion in fashion design design BTS.
  • ESMOD (8100 to €9250 / year): there also a network of schools witha curriculum design in 3 years, including a specialization in the third year. You can learn you from A to Z the technical manufacture of a garment.
  • School of the Union Chamber of Parisian couture: Super famous, it’sa curriculum of four years in styling.
  • Atelier Chardon Savard (€8300 / year): training infashion design, after having done a year of prep school at home or elsewhere.
  • Thestudio Berçot (10 €000 / year): a curriculum design in two years, theoretically accessible directly after graduating, some experience is actually hurt.

“Schools” and the training after a bac + 2, + 3

The public higher education

  • Professional licenses: one accessible year after a bac + 2, during which you need to set up a collection and make a three to six month internship according to the schools. Each has its specialization: high-tech, colorist, environment…Their goal is to quickly insert you in the job world.
  • Senior graduates of art applied (DSAA): training in two years, that makes you a lot think and search concepts. Some are specialized in textile, other mode. In theory the DSAA is to allow you to work as an art director, in practice, must be a little bottle to have this kind of post.
  • training in college and in particularthe University of fashion Lyon : these are college graduates, rather recommended if you want to do research, marketing, the com’ mode, but which can lead to a lot of other stuff.
  • The DNSEPashore in Mulhouse: it is the pursuit of the DNAP, in two years and still specialized in textile design.

Public & private schools

  • the national superior school of industrial (ENSCI) or ANAT Creation: it isa supra technical textile design training, which lasts 3 years and a half. You get all the basics of the weaves, the characteristics of the fabrics etc.
  • the national superior of Arts and Techniques of the Theatre Schoolof Lyon (ENSAATT): hyper deemed to be in the middle of the theater, it offers a costume-designer diploma in two years.
  • The French Institute of fashion(IFM, €9800 / year): hyper reputed, accessible to bac + 3, you can find a specialization in garment or accessory.
  • the ENSAD in Paris, ESMOD… are also accessible in the second, third or fourth year after a bac + 2 or + 3.Same for the school of the Union room of the Parisian couture, which offers pro contracts.

And it continues abroad

If ever you do not find your kif in France, metropolitan or not, countries not far from home are also provided in training.

In Belgium (Brussels)

  • The National School of Visual Arts (La Cambre): you go after a several-stage competition which takes place in September. There is an undergraduate and a master’s degree in styling and fashion designand textile design.

In the United Kingdom (London)

  • The St Martin’s School: BAC + 2 or + 3, you can apply for the masters of this school. The specialities are ultra-variees (and of course English): fashion design, textile, textile future… It is also one of the only schools to have training that the blaze is ‘fashion journalism’. Beware, in England the University is paid, so rates are about 4000 pounds the year.

In all cases, remember that what your pedigree and your school, which will give you a job, it is your job, your desire to get there and your motivation. Your degree is not a guarantee of your future job and not bad to get kicked to the derch and take initiatives to advance. On that note, get your needles!
