Pleasant is that one or that which generates pleasure (satisfaction, pleasure, joy). This adjective can be used to rate objects, situations or even people. For example: “Thank you all for the welcome, it is very nice for me to be here”, “Have you tried the soy cake? It has a nice taste ”, “ Last night I met the neighbor who lives upstairs, he seemed like a nice and nice boy ”.
Listed by Digopaul, the opposite of pleasant is unpleasant: “That food has a very strong and unpleasant smell”, “Do not be unpleasant and thank those who have given you a hand”.
Many times the idea of pleasant is used in relation to weather conditions. If a temperature of 23 degrees is registered in a city, there are no clouds in the sky and a gentle breeze is felt, the day can be said to be pleasant. This rating is due to the fact that most people, in the face of the aforementioned conditions, feel comfortable. So when, in the middle of winter, someone enters a heated environment, they can point out: “How nice it is in here!” .
Surprises are sometimes called pleasant. A person who, when getting up, finds that her boyfriend has prepared breakfast for her and left a bouquet of flowers on the table, can describe the scene as a “pleasant surprise”.
Of course, the same situation can be unpleasant, or not very relevant, since everything depends on the needs of each individual, their tastes, their goals in life. The degree of subjectivity of this term is similar to that of funny, sympathetic, attractive and charismatic, among many others: although for some the charisma of their favorite artist may be undeniable, for example, there will always be millions of people with dissimilar and opposite opinions.
In the example of breakfast and flowers, we are before two people who consider these gestures a necessary part of the relationship, or at least a way to nurture the union; However, there are many couples who do not pay attention to these things, and who even despise them. No matter how pleasant an action is to us, the world has different points of view for everything, including violence.
Regarding people, the qualification of pleasant is usually linked to kindness and courtesy in the treatment. The one who always displays a smile and addresses others with respect and cordiality, will surely be defined as someone pleasant.
An individual with these characteristics can be the ideal co-worker, neighbor or landlord, for example, since with his kindness he makes the treatment easier, especially in difficult or uncomfortable situations. As mentioned above, pleasant is a subjective term, for which no one is assured of this qualification; however, there are profiles with a higher degree of acceptance than rejection across various settings.
It is interesting to note that while this adjective may indicate a feeling of genuine liking for the way of being of the person receiving it, in certain cases it is possible to endow it with a slight double meaning or even use it to hide displeasure.
To graph the first case, imagine that a person accompanies a friend to his workplace and that he notices with surprise the abusive way in which his superiors address him; Given this, he can comment “I see that you have a very pleasant working environment ” with a sarcastic tone, to indicate just the opposite.
With regard to those situations in which we want to hide our displeasure before something or someone, we can think of a conversation about the performance of an artist who is friends with one of the interlocutors: others can say that “it was nice” to avoid hurt your feelings unnecessarily.
