The Invention of the Flashlight

The Invention of the Flashlight

The first prototypes of real flashlights probably already done between 1895 and 1899, but there is nothing known about it.

The Penlight

In January 1899 patented American inventor David Misell called however flashlight. This was the first useful flashlight.

The flashlight was, as the name suggests, a cylindrical lamp. The circular battery layers together in the light, in fact, as we know them today. The lamp was working with a filament of carbon, as well as other bulbs from that time. Usually, the flashlight had a small, oval-lens.

flashlight was still in the same year put into production under the name “Ever Ready” that would change from 1906 in the more familiar “Eveready”.

It was the producer Conrad Huber Misells invention brought up that there is to conquer the world . He attaches great importance to promoting its new product and did good business in the United States. At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 was positive on the penlight, and Huber could expand in Europe. Thus, he became the first major pioneer of the flashlight as a product.

The Flat Torch

With time, it was in Germany an alternative in the form of a flat, square torch. Here in layers of batteries side by side. The lamp is often had a dome-shaped lens, called a domlens. The flat flashlight, as he is usually called, was typical of Europe, while the torch was particularly popular and remained in the United States.

Weak Batteries

Although you can do eighty years now the battery was user-friendly, this was only moderately successful. There were a number of persistent problems exist, and thus also becomes the first generation of portable electric lamps were damaged.

Because of the many moisture in both types of batteries that leaks with great regularity. This makes rusty materials incorporated in the lamp quickly, which made it a one-off item.

The batteries were still quite poor and gave out electricity choppy. As a result, the lamps produced no solid beam of light, but images of light. Therefore, in the US the name of the flashlight is still the word “flashlight”.

The batteries are depleted quickly, even if the light but little used. The fire duration was often all from 05:00, every manufacturer was like a burn time of 10, 15 or more hours indicated on the package.

These problems are forcing the flashlight until the First World War as a luxury product, a toy with most any use of administrative nature. This can be seen on the embodiments of this time. The containers were covered with leather sleeves whether they were decorated with pictures or designs.

Flashlights during World War I.

During World War I, the utility value of the flashlight suddenly seen ordered by the high command of both sides and there were copies for all soldiers.

This led first to an explosive increase in demand for batteries. It must be set up also new factories to meet demand. Yet one could not continue to stir with the bad battery. It has been used in a substantial improvement in the quality of the batteries and established standards.

The lamp itself, usually a flat European torch, has been improved with the changes that were intended for use in a war.

The lights were given a reflector at the front.

There was a metal brace to flashlights, they could hang on the nodes in uniform.

A protective cap is mounted above the lens to prevent the light radiated in all directions and let the soldier position.

There were bills that are not too easy omswitchten prevents the lamp from accidentally contracted.

Flashlights after WWI

These developments flashlight was from the 20’s a common commodity that became available in all shapes and sizes. Moreover, the cylindrical lamp go replace flat torch in popularity in Europe.

But over time, there were still plenty of changes. To begin with, changing the materials used. Initially, they rely are still largely on the metal can corrode easily. After World War II, however, was more and more replace the plastic.

Of course there were also technical area has the necessary improvements are made. There were new bushings and new types of lenses. The most noticeable change was the invention of flashlights with adjustable focus.

More recently, the burner is generally more environmentally friendly. Even with flashlights bulb must be replaced by other types of lighting such as LED light or xenon light. Meanwhile, LED flashlight really become popular.

The story of the pressing and World War II

The bicycle lamp, also known as dynamo flashlight, is a separate type flashlight. It supplies its own energy by a squeeze mechanism to drive it again and again. It was developed around 1910 in Europe, due to the discomfort of the hassle of poor and leaking batteries. Unfortunately, the drug initially seemed worse than the disease. The first clamp cats were expensive, had only a limited light beam and the constant need to adjust was just annoying.

It came during World War II change. During this period, there was soon talk of a serious shortage of batteries. However, Dyno torch be a good replacement flashlight, so he re-arrested and verbetererd. Thus, this torch of World War II.

After that Dyno torch would permanently remains much more popular.
