What is the Kangaroo Mother Method?

Also known as Kangaroo Mother Care, the Kangaroo Mother Method is an alternative to conventional neonatal care for premature or underweight babies.

What is the Kangaroo Mother Method?

Named a Kangaroo Mother for the way mothers carry their baby, much the same as the kangaroos carry their babies in the early days, this method came as a response to less appropriate conditions in places with limited resources.

Origin of the Kangaroo Mother Method

Conceived and implemented by Hector Martinez and Edgar Rey Sanabria at the Instituto Materno-Infantil de Bogotá, Colombia, in 1979, this method emerged as an alternative to conventional care that does not exist in many places in the country.

The Mother-Kangaroo method emerged as a neonatal care for low birth weight infants in places with lack of incubators, lack of technological resources, cross-infection, high rates of neonatal mortality, maternal abandonment and early weaning.

This method, based on skin-to-skin contact between the low birth weight infant and the mother, brings with it a greater connection between mother and child, but also greater parental involvement in the neonatal care of the child. Then check out what the Mother-Kangaroo method consists of.

Know what the Kangaroo Mother method consists of

The Mother-Kangaroo method is a very simple method, which consists of keeping the newborn baby with low weight upright, with some clothing, against the mother’s or father’s chest.

To consider a system as a Kangaroo Mother Method, the Kangaroo Mother Method will have to allow the very early and guided contact between parents and baby, chosen freely by the family, performed in an increasing way, and duly accompanied by the health team.

Advantages of the Kangaroo Mother Method

Now that you know the Kangaroo Mother method, it is important to talk about the advantages of this method. Thus, the advantages include:

  • increased participation and parental confidence in the care of the low birth weight infant;
  • increase of the bond mother (father) – child;
  • decreased length of hospital stay;
  • reducing the risk of hospital infections;
  • stimulation of breastfeeding;
  • greater relationship and interconnection between parents and health team;
  • improved thermal control of the baby;
  • reduction in the number of low birth weight infants in intermediate care units;
  • reduction of the postpartum separation period between mother and child.
